The fox-like creatures have been spotted around the city recently.

What do coyotes look like? Coyotes resemble a cross between a fox and a small Collie or German Shepherd and weigh between 20 and 50 pounds.

It is important to know that coyotes tend to avoid humans as they prey on smaller rodents such as rabbits. However, if you do see a coyote while you're out or walking your pet, there are a few things you can do to diffuse the potential risk.

If the coyote is aggressive;

  • make your presence known by waving your arms and shouting or making noise
  • throwing sticks or rocks towards the coyote can scare them off
  • shout in a deep voice and maintain eye contact
  • do not turn around and run as this may prompt them to chase
  • if being approached, back away slowly toward buildings or human activity

Some preventative measures to take to avoid attracting coyotes to your area. These include:

  • keeping your yard clean - cleaning seeds, fallen fruits, pet feces and other attractants
  • bringing pet food dishes inside
  • only bringing out your garbage/recycling on their designated collection days
  • not feeding the coyotes by leaving any sort of food outside

If the coyote is a distance away, turn away and leave the area. It is important to report all sightings to the city in order to help them get the situation under control.

To report sightings of a coyote, reach out to the Parks Department at parks@airdrie.ca or 403-948-8400.

If the coyote is actively attacking a person or pet, call 9-1-1 immediately.
