36th Street Northeast in Calgary turned into a runway this morning (April 25) when a plane, travelling from Medicine Hat to the Calgary International Airport was forced to make an emergency landing on the busy roadway.

Just before 6:00 am, the female pilot radioed that she was running low on fuel.  Shortly after, she landed the plane on 36th Street northbound between 12th and 16th Avenue Northeast,   According to Stuart Brideaux of Calgary EMS, remarkably none of the two crew members and four passengers on the plane, nor anyone on the ground, was injured in the incident.  Witnesses say the plane flew under the traffic signals at 12th Avenue.

Northbound 36th Street was closed for several hours after the emergency landing while members of the National Transportation Safety Board investigated.

Terry Super, the owner/operator of Medicine Hat's Super T Aviation, the plane's owners, says the Piper Navajo aircraft left Medicine Hat at 4:47 am and was being flown by a "very capable pilot" who had several years experience.

Super said in a statement that the landing was a result of a loss of power of an unknown cause.
