You might think that the last day of summer, when the high is five and the low a chilly zero degrees, wouldn't be a great choice for planting.

But that's exactly what Mayor Peter Brown and members of Airdrie City Council were doing on September 21st.  The politicians broke out their shovels and, with the help of members of the Airdrie Horticultural Society and community gardens volunteers, planted a public orchard in the community of Sagewood.

The edible orchard went in next to the existing Community Garden in the city neighbourhood.  The stand will give residents a chance to sample fruit from a variety of trees.

The trees and shrubs will also be labelled to make it easy to identify them to let Airdrie residents determine which kinds do well in our climate.

The weather over the past week or more in Airdrie might make one suspect that planting tundra would be a good option.
