You're driving home on a Saturday when suddenly, you see before you, a line of cars that are stopped.  In the distance, you see familiar red and blue flashing lights and you realize, you've come across a police Check Stop.  Quickly....what's the first thing you say?

For the sake of the PG nature of this story, we won't ask you to give an answer to that question, but suffice to say it doesn't come naturally to you to say something like, "Oh, look honey!   We've come across a Check Stop!  Now we can have a nice visit with the RCMP."

We have some good news!  On Saturday, there's a Check Stop you can actually have fun in and support a good cause at the same time.  Actually, if you're supporting Team Blue, the Airdrie RCMP and Airdrie Municipal Enforcement team in the Sirens Lip Sync Showdown challenge, two good causes at the same time.

Corporal Gina Slaney, Head Trainer (we just gave her that title) for Team Blue says the two law enforcement groups will be holding a Charity Check Stop on Saturday.  The question is: what's the difference between a "Charity Check Stop" and a real one.  Trainer Slaney explains.

"A Check Stop is when the police are stopping you from where you want to go.  Obviously, you have to stop at a real Check Stop.  This Charity Check Stop is different, we're not forcing you to stop, but we would really like your support.  So we're going to be set up, the lights will be on, hopefully, we'll have some things for the kids and you can drop off your toy donations to support the Lioness Christmas Hampers."

Slaney says they'll be set up in the parking lot of the Real Canadian Superstore located on Veteran's Drive between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm on Saturday.  Slaney says it's very important for Team Blue to lay a smackdown on Team Red, the Airdrie Fire Department, and Alberta Health Services.  She says the tone of the competition has turned nasty.  She says that with her tongue firmly planted in her cheek as she goes on to beg.....uh, make that request, your support.

"There's been lots of smack talk happening since this challenge started.  We really, really want to come out on top of this challenge.  We really don't want to have to do a lip sync."

The Charity Check Stop will be the second fundraiser for Team Blue.  Last week, both teams took part in a Toy Drive at the Walmart store which Slaney says was a huge success.

"We were very happy with the amount of toys that were donated.  We're not going to reveal who came out on top of that one.  We're going to wait until the end of the month and do a final tally before we let the citizens of Airdrie know who's on top for the month of November."

When asked if that's just a sly way of saying Team Blue lost, Slaney replies with a terse, "no comment," followed by gales of laughter.

Also on Saturday, the Airdrie Lioness Club will be holding a city-wide food drive.  Lioness members will be at food stores all over the city with lists of most needed items for the hampers.  You're encouraged to donate while you do your shopping,

Last year the Christmas Hamper Program gave out 367 hampers and the club is anticipating an even greater need this Christmas.
