As their investigation is still progressing, Cpl. Peters didn’t have details as to the motive of the shooting or what took place on the Highway that day.

Peters did say that the family of the victim has been notified about the charges which was welcome news to them.

“They expressed their gratitude to the investigative team which we are thankful for. The update that I have on his status is that he has a very long road of recovery ahead. There will be an extensive amount of physiotherapy to train to regain a quality of life. This has been a life-changing event for him.”

Police say that they’ve recovered the firearm used and are awaiting the bullet recently taken out of the victim in Germany to ensure it matches that from the gun.

With the shooting making international headlines, Cpl. Peters talked about how the residents of Stoney Nakoda have been dealing with the incident.

“Any community where something like this takes place feels a certain level of, not necessarily responsibility but they feel sympathy and empathy for what’s taken place. I can tell you that the cooperation and the hospitality from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation during the investigation for all of our members has been fantastic. We have updated the Band Council to let them know that there was an outcome to the case.”

The 16-year-old youth remains in custody and made his first court appearance in Cochrane earlier today.
