It’s a great day for golfers in the City of Airdrie. While the grass may still be brown, the green is open.

Woodside Golf Course opened its course Thursday morning.

“The first five groups I saw off the first tee, everyone had big smiles on their face and were ready to get going,” said of operations Chris McNickle.

To the delight of many eager golfers the driving range has been open for the last couple of weeks, McNickle said he was glad to see that translated into good numbers for the morning of opening day.

“I knew just by the traffic we were getting there that people were excited to get out, but it’s been overwhelming, already the response to being open this early,” he said.

Woodside Golf Course usually tries to be open by April 10, so being able to get on the green a few days early is welcome.

It’s also a bit of a relief for the golf course, which is celebrating its 30 anniversary this because last year the cold and snowy spring made for some major delays.

“It’s a million times better than last year which was our latest opening in our history at April 26,” said McNickle. “This is a nice early start for us.”

McNickle adds the course appears to have weathered this winter very well.
