The Airdrie Elite Midget Lightning built up a 3 - 0 second period lead but then had to hang on to get the win last night (November 24) in an Alberta Female Hockey League game played at Genesis Place in Airdrie.

The Rocky Mountain Raiders scored two quick goals in the third period but couldn't overcome the deficit and fell 4 - 3 to the Lightning.  Airdrie Head Coach Jay Simpson says his club had to overcome a scrambly third period.  After the Raiders pulled to within a goal Simpson called a time-out to settle the team down.

"We decided to bring them in with the time-out and calm everyone down and they played hockey and got back to playing the way they could and we came out with the W."

The Lightning power play was strong last night.  Simpson says it's something they work on.  "We use the overload and the girls are really patient with it.  We've got a couple of girls who are really, really good at moving the puck and seeing the entire ice.  It's nice to see them really develop."

Tonight the Lightning are back in action, hosting the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs at Genesis Place.  Simpson says they'll need to play better against a club that is much stronger than the Raiders who have only one win this season.

"We need to come out with a full 60 minutes against Red Deer.  They're a better team than the team we played against tonight and if we play the way we did tonight, we're going to run into some trouble.  So we just need to put in a little better effort and make sure we're ready to go."

Tonight's contest gets underway at 7:30 pm.
