The Rocky View Divisional Playoffs are looming on the horizon for local basketball teams, and the Senior Girls Croxford Cavaliers are ready for them.

Head coach Aaron Nisbett said so far this season, the team has played really well.

"I'm honestly happy with the performance. This is our first winning season that we've ever had and it's a good feeling. This is the first time that we've been able to take some actual victories at home, on the road, and the players have grown and they've improved. That's a successful season."

Nisbett said what makes that even more impressive is that this is the first season most of the girls have played together.

The Cavs hold a 3-2 record, with their only losses to the Chestermere Lakers and the Cochrane Cobras, the top two teams in the league. As the playoffs draw near, Nisbett says his team will need to play with intensity against teams of that calibre.

"If you're going to play and you want to compete, then you've got to step up and play the entire game. Teams like that aren't teams that look kindly upon mental lapses and mistakes, so it's just a matter of consistency and making sure that we play our game from first quarter all the way to the fourth."

Airdrie's newest school currently sits higher than Bert Church and George McDougall in the standings. Nisbett says the team is energized by that, but he doesn't put much stock in it.

"I know the players like the bragging rights for it. That's the thing with high school basketball. When one team's high, the other ones are lower and it rotates all the way through. These other schools will be powerhouses again, and someday we'll be a powerhouse as well and we'll kinda cycle our way through it."

The Cavaliers will play one more time before Divisionals. They'll face the Springbank Phoenix on Tuesday (February 6).
