It was a big night for the Airdrie CFR Bisons yesterday (September 30th) as they played their home opener against the Calgary Buffaloes.

Dace Carlson scored the game-winner on a shorthanded rush as the Bisons won 4-2.

Jacob Cathcart opened the scoring just over two minutes in the first period with help from Jake Petrie and Dean Olynek.

The Buffaloes tied the game early in the second period before Tristan Zandee took the lead back for the Bisons a few minutes later.

The Buffaloes would tie it once more in the third before Carlson broke away on his shorthanded chance to give the Bisons the lead for good with Colton Koran sealing the win with an empty net goal.

Head coach Dustin Taylor was thoroughly impressed with the win.

“It’s very cool to have success on opening weekend like this and start instilling that belief for the players to do something amazing this year.”

Taylor said that goalie Steven Bacovsky was the standout player in the game, making 37 saves and assisting on the empty net goal.

Before the opening faceoff, the Bisons took time to remember former player Markus Lavallee who passed away in the summer of 2015.

The team continued their tradition of having the captain of the Bisons wear Markus’ number 17 which this year is Jett Jones.

Members of the Lavallee family and representatives from CFR Chemicals were on hand for the ceremonial puck drop before the game.

The Bisons are now 2-0 after beating the Buffaloes and the Flames in their opening games of the season but now Taylor says it’s time to focus on their next opponents.

“We’re right back to work. We get a day off on Monday from the ice and then Tuesday we’re getting back to work and starting to prep for opponents next weekend.”

The Bisons are in Calgary this Saturday to take on the Northstars before returning home on Sunday for a date with the Nektar Data Systems Raiders from St. Albert.
