Four student-athletes from Bert Church High School in Airdrie have a golden glow as they return from the 2018 Special Olympics Ontario Sports Championships. 

The team captured the gold medal in bocce at the championships, held May 29th and 30th in Peterborough.

The team is made up of two students with intellectual disabilities and two without.  Team members are Ami Schann, Emma Rockwell and the brother and sister duo of Noah and Kendra Van Dewark.  The team was accompanied to the championships by Bert Church Physical Education teacher Ian Ferguson and Learning Support teacher Cynthia Dahl. 

The team from Bert Church competed against students from Orleans, Brockville, Peterborough and Barrie, Ontario in Unified Bocce's Red Division.

Special Olympics Unified Sports promotes social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences that joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.  Since 2015, Unified Sports has been in high schools in Alberta through a partnership between Special Olympics Alberta and the Alberta School's Athletic Association.
