The Pure Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament hosted at the Airdrie Martial Arts Centre on Saturday, had 15 of their athletes placed in the provincial-wide competition, and for some of the team Airdries competitors, it was only their first or second time to compete against other provincial teams.

"We had competitors from Airdrie get gold, silver, and bronze." - Luis Cofre

Co-owner of the AMAC Luis Cofre, expresses how proud he is of both the female and male fighters, "We had competitors from Airdrie get gold, silver, and bronze. So we had a lot of fighters place which is really gratifying for us as a team, especially having our coaching there watching and for it being the inaugural tournament, it was pretty satisfying to see."

Cofre went on to explain, Jiu-Jitsu is probably the most dynamic form of self-defense for males, females, and kids, for building confidence.

"It's important to have it in Airdrie because you know, we are a young growing community and this is a very community-based type sport where it's very friendly, people are very receptive to other people joining and there's very little ego involved."

The AMAC is the only gym that has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu currently in Airdrie.

"We're getting a really positive response from the community, and it's really good to invite other teams to come to Airdrie to see that we are a competitive team and that we can provide a really good training facility for everyone." Said Cofre.

Cofre also says AMAC hopes to host another tournament in April.
