With over 35 years of experience, Matt Hanak is no stranger when it comes to the world of hockey.

That's why it's no surprise that Hanak was recently named the general manager for the Airdrie Thunder for the upcoming HJHL season.

"I'm looking forward to working with the ownership group and specifically the new Director of Operations, Derek Stamp. Him and I go a way back so I'm looking forward to reconnecting with him and working with the Thunder moving forward."

Hanak spent his playing days with the Edmonton Minor Hockey Association before moving to Calgary to work with the Calgary Northstars and the Calgary Royals. His journey would later take him to Hockey Alberta with the Peewee prospects and the Alberta Winter Games.

His most recent role was Director of Operations for the Winter Games in Airdrie in February 2020.

"It was a great experience and really fun to be around the Ron Ebbesen (arena) at that time as well. Packed crowds for the rink and just a lot of electricity and fun for that week. It was a great opportunity."

Hanak joins the Thunder who are still considered defending champions after the 2020 playoffs were cancelled because of the pandemic. The league attempted a comeback last fall but had to close again in November.

He said he's looking forward to building a roster and bringing that energy and winning atmosphere back to Airdrie.

"Using that experience of being a coach and on the board and as a parent as well with my son playing hockey. It's been a great experience, great opportunity, love it and hopefully, I can take that experience and put it towards the Thunder."

The Heritage Junior Hockey League is working on creating a schedule for the upcoming season. The Thunder have already planned its summer skates to be held every Wednesday beginning July 7.
