The Edmonton Oil Kings finished the year with the best record in the Western Hockey League and they couldn't have done it without two Airdrie players on its roster.

Former Airdrie Xtreme players Jake Neighbours and Keegan Slaney played for the team this year, leading them to a 20-2 record, clinching the Central Division and the best record overall in the league.

Discover Airdrie caught up with the pair to talk about the season that was and how they pressed on despite a short schedule and interruptions due to COVID-19.

Fans were prohibited from attending home games, but Neighbours said that put more emphasis on the team to crank up the energy.

"I think the lack of energy in the building obviously sucked but I think we did a great job of creating our own energy."

"Once you got into the season, I honestly didn't even notice it," added Slaney. "I was just more focused on hockey and my game."

f people were reaching out this season and seeing how I was and how everything was going because no one could come and watch."

The Oil Kings finished the 2021 season with a 3-0 shutout of the Medicine Hat Tigers on May 6.
