250 young athletes, representing 47 Alberta communities have converged on Red Deer as part of Team Alberta in the 2019 Canada Winter Games, the largest amateur multi-sport competition in the country.  

Seven of those athletes are from Airdrie and Rocky View County.  

The opening ceremonies for the games were held last night and Elijah Thompson from Calgary, a member of the Artistic Gymnastics Team was the Flag Bearer for Team Alberta.  Competition gets underway today and will run through March 3rd.

The athletes representing Airdrie include Thomas Hulsman who'll compete in Biathlon, Spencer Allen who will participate in Para-Alpine Skiing, and Savanna Martel who's competing in figure skating, 

Keagan Slaney who is from Airdrie and Craig Armstrong from Rocky View Country are part of the Alberta Men's Hockey Team that will start play on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm with a game against Manitoba.

The final two local competitors are Teyana Roberts of Airdrie and Douglas O'Brien from Rocky View who will take part in Judo.

Another four athletes on Team Alberta are from Cochrane.

Alberta's Minister of Culture and Tourism Ricardo Miranda says, "Alberta is very proud to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games and I know Team Alberta and the City of Red Deer will represent Alberta well.  I'm confident they will show why we are known for our major sport event hosting as well as our sportsmanship, passion, and sport excellence."
