If you’re hoping to dig out of the mountain of blankets and shrug off your onesie, you are in luck.

Starting tonight and through to Friday, Airdrie will be seeing much warmer temperatures. According to Natalie Hazel, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the winds have shifted in our favour.

“Tonight's temperatures do not look particularly bad, and actually quite close to normal for the overnight temperatures. There are still a few cold days still both Thursday night into Friday morning; but not extreme cold. Friday looks like you've entered an increased number of [warm] days. So that presents its own hazards.”

Hazel warned that because there still may be snow on the way in the coming days, coupled with melting and freezing conditions over the next few days can spell danger on roadways and natural ice rinks.

“If you have natural ice rinks near you, rivers and lakes and whatnot, it would probably be best not to venture out onto those as we get into warmer temperatures starting on Friday,” she said. “With these conditions, even with below zero temperatures at night., the ice condition can change quite quickly.”

While there are more balmy days on the way, Hazel said winter isn’t completely done with Alberta just yet.

“We still have March and Alberta can get snow and almost any time in the year. So you still have to be prepared. Don't be surprised to be surprised.”

It should be noted that Balzac Billy predicted for six more weeks of winter on Groundhog Day, so we still have a ways to go before the crocuses and daises are popping up.
