On September 1, at 7:30 in the morning, a member of the Airdrie Rural RCMP was on routine patrol on Highway 2 near Crossfield.

The officer stopped a 2012 Chrysler 300 for a traffic violation and, upon further investigation, detained the two male occupants under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The roadside search resulted in the arrests of the men after officers found roughly 17.5 pounds of marijuana.

The driver, 28, and the passenger, 23, are both from Fort McMurray.

Both are now in police custody and are facing charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Of the seizure, Cpl. Troy Switzer with the Airdrie Rural RCMP stated: “This is a significant amount of marijuana that was removed from circulation. As a result, we have taken two alleged drug dealers off the street, and have prevented the distribution of these drugs into our community.”

The RCMP Police Dog Service also provided assistance with the investigation.
