Although Christmas is still a ways away, it's at least starting to look like it with snow now on the ground here in Airdrie. With Christmas getting closer, Stephen's Backpacks is preparing for its largest Christmas backpack giveaway yet.

According to Nancy McPhee, The Executive Director and proud mom of Stephen from Stephen’s Backpack Society, the reason why they hope this year will be the largest giveaway yet is because everybody wants to help.

"So many people are reaching out from corporations this year, just to make it a really great year for a lot of families that are really struggling right now."

According to McPhee, there is a huge demand for help.

"The demand has been so great for agencies reaching out and families reaching out, needing gifts for their kids. So we are counting on a really big year."

One thing the Society still needs is cash donations and volunteers to help pack the backpacks, and anybody who is interested in building a backpack can visit their website.

Mcphee went on to talk about why the Society creates Christmas backpacks each year.

"I think the most important thing is just to honor a legacy for Stephen, like he has been doing this since he was five years old. And he's 21 now, and he still has the passion. And I think, you know, as a family, it's just a small way that we can give back in these really hard times."

Last year Stephen's Backpacks packed around 3000 Christmas backpacks and this year they are hoping to be closer to 4000.
