Airdrie’s Stephen’s Backpacks is sending over 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to Montreal for Ukrainian refugees.

Nancy McPhee, The Executive Director and proud mom of Stephen from Stephen’s Backpack Society talked to DiscoverAirdrie about how the whole idea came about.

“There are 1000 refugee children in Montreal right now from Ukraine. This woman from Montreal reached out to me, because she had heard about us through a contact that she connects with that said we help here in the city, and so it's just wonderful.”

McPhee mentioned completing the backpacks won't be the hard part for them, the hard part would be the shipping to Montreal.

“I phoned Highland Moving and I said, here's my problem, I think we can do the backpacks no problem, but I'm not going to be able to afford to ship them because they're pretty heavy supplies. They said, "no problem, we'll donate that” so that was incredible.”

According to McPhee, they have over 300 backpacks full of various school supplies for elementary, middle school, and high school students on their way to Montreal this Friday.

Stephen’s Backpacks just finished redecorating their second home of the year and they hope to do at least one more before the year ends, along with one of their biggest events of the year.

“Of course, our big Christmas backpack promotions that we do for several agencies. It's going to be a very busy next few months.”
