A local charity is gearing up for back to school with its sights set on helping families here in Airdrie.

Stephen's Backpack Society will be partnering with King's Court Church for their Back to School BBQ on August 24 from 6-8 p.m.

Nancy McPhee, the Executive Director of the society, hopes they are able to help kids that are in need.

"We're going to be giving out backpacks with school supplies in them to kids that just can't afford it for elementary school, middle school, and high school. We're really excited to be helping some kids out in Airdrie."

Aramide, Team Lead for Outreach Events with King's Court Church, hopes plenty of Airdronians can come out for the free barbeque.

"We're hoping to share the love of Christ with the community, and also provide essential school supplies and a fun-filled day for students that are going back to school, as well as create a sense of community."

The free barbecue will feature plenty of fun for the family including pony rides, face painting, and a balloon artist. Volunteers will be serving up burgers, hot dogs and goodie bags

"[It's] for families to be able to go and not have to pay anything for supper and then at the same time have Stephens backpacks come through and say 'if your child needs school supplies and a backpack, we're there for you," explained McPhee.

The event will take place the week before school starts, and organizers are prepared to hand out well over 100 backpacks.

Stephen's Backpack Society also plans on refurnishing three homes this year for families in need before gearing up in preparation for their Christmas Backpacks.
