With the new year, comes renewed anticipation in all areas of life - from anticipated albums to be dropped by your favourite artists, to new movies and series, as well as highly-talked-about news events. So what can we expect from 2023?

Politics and current events:

In Alberta politics, we are only a few months away from a provincial election. Premier Danielle Smith has made it clear that she will honour the scheduled May 29, 2023 election date. While no official campaign-style tours of local MLAs have yet begun, it is safe to say that MLAs in both the UCP and opposition NDP, including those in Airdrie are already working on their platforms to present to voters.

And while Albertans and the politicians in the province will be gearing up for the provincial election, across the pond in England, the country will be getting ready for King Charles III's coronation. Officially, the King will be crowned on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey following the death of his mother and previous reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation will be the first since 1953 and for many across the globe, it will be the first time they will see a monarch crowned.

Construction in the city:

For Airdronians October 2023 will be the month that the 40th Avenue Interchange to QEII will be completed. According to the city, construction on the interchange started on April 30, 2021.

"The project will execute the construction of a new interchange (QEII overpass with on/off ramps), two overpasses (CP Rail and Main Street) and a bridge (Nose Creek)," the city stated.

The city has touted that the 40th Avenue Interchange to the  QEII is a key component of the ultimate transportation network and that the additional network capacity will reduce traffic congestion along the City's existing arterial corridors, including access to QEII.

Entertainment and the arts:

2023 marks quite the year for both the movie landscape and the music world. The Superbowl halftime show which has offered glitzy, glamorous, sometimes scandalous, but always highly entertaining shows is headlining Rihanna this year at Super Bowl 57 on Sunday, February 12, in Glendale, Arizona.

Then there's the (hopefully soon) to-be-announced new album by Beyoncé. While the artist has not given any hints of when the album will be dropped or whether it will drop this year at all, fans are abuzz with hope that following Act I: Renaissance this new album will be the best one yet.

For movie-goers, 2023 is chock-full of big box office titles. The live-action of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" will be out this year, though there is no concrete date yet. then for the fans of Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones, it is possible this latest chapter in the adventure series will debut this year and may be the last time they see the beloved actor in his hat sporting the whip. And if you're not into action and adventure, but prefer something with a whole lot more pink, the comedy film based on the iconic doll, Barbie will be in theatres this summer.
