Premier Jason Kenney received approval of 51.4 per cent in his highly anticipated leadership review and has announced he will be stepping down as United Conservative Leader.

34,298 votes were cast by UCP members and despite previous statements by Kenney that he would continue in his role if he received 50 per cent.

Kenney appeared in Calgary shortly after the results were announced.

"While we have our internal differences, we must remember the shared values that unite us as conservatives, and we must always remember the promise of Alberta. This great land of opportunity where dreams come true and anyone can achieve their God-given potential," he said.

The UCP caucus is slated to meet in Calgary on Thursday.
