Airdrie's fire crews responded to a small grass fire in Nose Creek Park on the path by the Catholic Church on Friday afternoon.

According to the city, the small fire burned grass beside the path roughly seven metres long, though it was quickly extinguished within a few minutes of the fire crew arriving. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Despite slightly cooler temperatures over the past week, the City of Airdrie continues to be under a fire restriction. Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention and Public Education, James Kostuk, had previously underlined that the cooler temperatures and precipitation would have to be sustained for a longer period of time in order for the restriction to be downgraded.

Kostuk reminded residents that things like inappropriate disposal of smoking materials, especially cigarette butts are one of the most common ways that fires start.

Fire restrictions prohibit any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a residential backyard fire pit. Other prohibitions include burning barrel use, incinerator fires, as well as consumer fireworks.

Last week, Rocky View County downgraded its fire ban to a fire advisory for the entire county. This advisory represents a moderate fire risk and will remain in effect as long as conditions remain.
