A fire in an attached garage in a townhouse complex located in Airdrie's Windsong neighbourhood last night (May 9) caused an estimated $10,000 in damage.

The Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) was called to the fire on the 100 block of Windstone Park just after 8:00 pm.  Before their arrival, two of the home's occupants had evacuated to safety but the family cat was still inside the home.  When firefighters entered the house they encountered heavy smoke.

The fire was located in the attached garage and was quickly extinguished by the first fire crew that arrived.  Firefighters also evacuated the people in the neighbouring units as a precaution.

Some good news arrived when the cat was located unharmed.  As a safety message to the public, the AFD says to never go back inside to look for your pets in a fire but instead let firefighters know your pet is missing and they will take care of the search.

The home was cleared of smoke before the departure of AFD crews.

Thirteen firefighters and four apparatus responded to the fire which has been deemed not suspicious but is still under investigation.
