Albertans in the path of a potential disaster will be saved by the province's newly digitized emergency warning system, according to its supporters.

Municipal Affairs Minister Hector Goudreau says the new model demonstrates the value of social media when traditional communication tools like radio and TV stations fail because of a power outage or a missed warning.

Goudreau says the wildfire that devastated Slave Lake last spring and knocked out power to traditional media providing alerts proves the new approach is worthy. He admits the system will only be as effective as those on the ground monitoring the approach of a disaster, and no - they won't be successful a hundred percent of the time, but they'll do everything they can to make the alerts as accurate as possible.  The first province-wide test will occur on September 21.
