The George McDougall Mustangs are celebrating as the new champions of the Rocky View High School Football League, the first time anyone other than the Cochrane Cobras has won the title in eight years.

On Friday in Cochrane, the Mustangs handed the Cobras a 38 - 20 loss to put a stop to the Cobra's dominance of Rocky View football.

The win means the Mustangs will now face the top-ranked Tier II team in Alberta, the Holy Trinity Academy Knights of Okotoks in their next game.  No date has been announced for the game.

The game didn't affect the high school football rankings in the province.  The Mustangs remain the third-ranked team in Tier II while the Cobras are still ranked ninth in Tier I.  The loss for Cochrane was the first after seven wins this season.  They'll face the 5 - 4 Foothills Composite of Okotoks who lost this weekend to Raymond 51 - 7.

In the Consolation semi-finals played this weekend, the W.H. Croxford Cavaliers stopped Springbank 42 - 3. The Cavs moved up one spot in the Tier II rankings to seventh.  The Bert Church Chargers downed Chestermere in the other semi-final.  The results mean the Cavaliers and Chargers will meet in the Consolation final.
