A suspect is in hospital with serious injuries following a routine traffic stop in Canmore last night.

A Banff RCMP officer pulled over a driver in the town of Canmore at approximately 11:15 p.m. Friday. During the traffic stop, the lone occupant of the vehicle and the officer exchanged gunfire before the suspect fled on foot into a wooded area.

RCMP officers surrounded the wooded area and called in extra help. The RCMP Police Dog Services team, RCMP Emergency Response Team, and the Calgary Police Service helicopter was called in.

A short time later, the suspect was located.

STARS air ambulance was called and the 26-year-old resident of Canmore was taken to a Calgary hospital with serious injuries.

No officers were injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has now taken over the investigation.
