On Monday afternoon as Airdrie resident, Steve Grueber was on his way to play some golf, he noticed that rush hour traffic seemed to be more hectic than usual.

"[At around a quarter to 5] I was headed up over the overpass over Veterans Boulevard and the traffic started to back up and I saw there was a bunch of baby ducklings that were on the road. There were probably five or six of them," he said.

Grueber pulled into the right lane and stopped, while the driver in front of him also stopped and got out.

"It was kind of funny because they tried to push and wave them [the ducklings] across the road, and they just kind of started going into the oncoming traffic. So he tried to pick them all up at the same time."

Grueber said that another man who had been driving a white truck also got out to assist.

"They pulled them across to the on-ramp on the north side there and then they thought better of it," Grueber said. "So they walked all the way down the ditch towards the Tim Hortons and put them down by the creek that's down there."

Although there was some frustration from motorists about the traffic slowdown, when drivers realized who was on the road, frustration quickly ebbed into heartwarming smiles.

"People were frustrated because they pulled over and blocked the one lane where the white truck went through. I saw them, so I just stopped and parked my truck there. Oncoming traffic stopped as well and so everyone was respecting the little ducklings."

He said he isn't surprised by the endearing actions of his fellow Airdronians.

"No, not at all. I think anybody in their right mind would [do the same] when you see baby animals. You're going to do what's right and help them out."
