A group of Airdrie's knitters have been busy using their skills to knit for charity. They  proudly showed off their amazing creations last week at the Airdrie Public Library (APL).

The group - who meet twice a week at Good Earth Cafe on Mondays and APL on Thursdays has been working on NICU blankets for a year now. They usually have one or two on the go and send them out to the Western Oddball Baby Blanket Society who then donate them to the Neo-Natal Unit at Foothills Hospital. They usually donate twice a year, so the Airdrie Knitters try to have at least five blankets done to donate by the end of June and sometime in December. One of the members has begun crocheting little teddy bears to go with the blankets. Some of the blankets are a group effort, with group members doing one section of six inches before passing it on to the next person on the list, and some of the blankets are done by individual members.

This fall there was a request on Ravelry.com for knitters and crocheters to make scarves for all the participants and volunteers of the Special Olympics taking place in St. Albert and Jasper during February and March 2012. Members of the Airdrie group immediately began to knit or crochet scarves for this, too.

The group enjoys giving back to the communities around them in some way. Most are busy with their own knitting or crocheting projects, but this allows them to help others without much fuss, work or just having to write a cheque. It also promotes the group to the public.

The group enjoys getting together to work and support one another. You are welcome to join them at one of their "knit nights" - Mondays from 7 to 9 at Good Earth and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 at APL.
