On March 13, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange, released details on the final draft of the kindergarten to grade six curriculum and the supports and resources available to help teachers as they prepare to introduce the new curriculum in classrooms this fall.

The provincial government is investing $59 million this year to ensure that quality learning and teaching resources aligned with the new curriculum. This funding is part of a $191 million investment over three years to support the new curriculum implementation across the province.

“Since releasing the draft kindergarten to grade six curriculum over a year ago, we have been listening carefully to all the feedback from teachers, education partners, classroom piloting participants, and everyday Albertans.”

LaGrange says they used this constructive and meaningful feedback to make final updates to the kindergarten to grade six curriculum in three subjects: English Language Arts and Literature, Mathematics, and Physical Education and Wellness.

“The new physical education and wellness curriculum fulfills our government's platform commitments of ensuring all elementary school students learn the importance of obtaining and providing consent, as well as fundamental financial literacy skills.”

LaGrange says many changes will be made to the three subjects.

“In mathematics, content was redistributed and strengthened to address fractions, measurements, operations and percentages to better develop number sense. We also further enhanced Physical Education and Wellness content in several areas, including consent, mental health, nutrition, and safety. And finally, changes specific to English language Arts and Literature content includes updates to strengthening reading for enjoyment, creative and critical thinking, and digital literacy.”

According to LaGrange, the revision also identifies feedback on content load, age appropriateness, word clarity, and First Nations, Metis and Inuit content.

“In addition, we've aligned the new curriculum with top-performing jurisdictions both in Canada and internationally.”

The new Mathematics, English language Arts, and Literature curriculum for students in kindergarten to grade three will be implemented in September 2022. The new curriculum for grades four to six in Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Literature will be implemented the following school year starting in September of 2023, with Physical Education and Wellness for K-6 being released first.
