As Alberta Culture Days winds down at the end of this month, the next several days will be dedicated to Indigenous culture. There are several events in the Airdrie area, which all Albertans all welcomed to attend.

On Thursday, 29 September, starting at 4:30 p.m, till 6:30 p.m, there will be an online Indigenous snack class hosted by the Calgary Genesis Centre. Participants will learn more about authentic indigenous cuisine through this virtual class focused on indigenous cooking styles.

"You can add a recipe to your repertoire while learning more about indigenous culture and meeting some new community residents," the event organizers stated.

On Friday, September 30, which will be the second national Truth and Reconciliation Day, the CIF Reconciliation Society and the City of Calgary will be hosting an in-person Pokiaks Orange Shirt Day Commemoration at Fort Calgary from 9:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to come and walk with others to commemorate survivors of Residential Schools and the Sixties Scoop and to remember the children that were lost.

"We will also hear from elders, survivors and activists working to make positive change, we will offer honour songs and traditional dancing and food too! We invite you to come and participate in our dancing, and interactive art booths, visit our artisans, bring your children, and your friends to take reconciliation together to help us make the future better for us all."

Also on Friday, September 30, the Lougheed House in Calgary will be hosting an in-person evening filled with Métis music and conversation at 7:30 p.m. Métis musicians Richard Piche and Billy Joseph will be in attendance.

"In between pieces, our Indigenous Curator and the evening’s MC Dawn Wambold will teach the audience the history of Métis music and the instruments that make it magical."

According to the province, Alberta Culture Days is an opportunity to discover, experience and celebrate arts and culture through local events and activities, in person and online across the province.

"Last year, more than 500 communities from coast to coast participated in National Culture Days to increase awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Nationally, Culture Days will be celebrated from September 23 to October 16."
