Late on Wednesday evening, The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) stated that they had returned to normal grid conditions.

Earlier in the day AESO issued a Grid Alert. According to AESO, the hot temperatures and low wind, combined with an unplanned generator outage caused the alert to go into effect.

"Please consider conserving electricity through peak consumption hours of 4-7 p.m.," a tweet stated.

AESO recommends that in order to converse energy one should try to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances, minimize the use of air conditioning/space heaters, delay the use of major power-consuming appliances such as washers, dryers and dishwashers until after peak hours, as well as using cold water for washing clothes. AESO stated that Grid Alerts are issued when the power system is under stress and they are preparing to use emergency reserves to meet demand and maintain system reliability.
