Amidst a boisterous cheering crowd of their fellow peers, four students from George McDougall High School received recognition from the school and the Airdrie RCMP for their selfless actions.

"There are opportunities as a principal to recognize the amazing contributions to our community. That's one of the greatest jobs for principals; to be able to do that," said high school principal Scott Bloxham. "Today, we have a very special presentation that's going to be given in regards to some mustangs who have gone above and beyond."

On February 17, 2022, the four students Ceirra Burk, Madison Davy, Lexie Ries, and Kenadee Karpala were leaving school when they saw a two-year-old girl standing on the side of the road in the cold.

"[She] was not wearing any pants and she was not dressed for the weather, wearing a full diaper soaked in urine," said school resource officer, Constable Greg Neufeld during the presentation. "These students [could] clearly tell that something was not right. The students took it upon themselves to not only stop and check on the well-being of the child but also took the child out of the cold into their vehicle to care for her and keep her safe."

The teenagers then contacted the police and continued to look after the little girl until the police arrived.

"Once the police arrived, the students continue to assist in caring for the child and even changed the child to a fresh diaper and provided their own lunches."

The little girl eventually did make it back home safely.

The students were presented with placards of recognition from the RCMP and were met with applause from their school resource officers Constable Gabrielle Spencer, Corporal James McConnell, Sargeant Brad White, Inspector Dave Brunner, as well as the detachment commander of the RCMP detachment in Airdrie, Inspector Lauren Weire.

Inspector Brunner commended the students on not only their compassion but said their actions showed true leadership.

"Your kindness and compassion are appreciated by our organization, the family [and] all citizens," he said.
