The Airdrie RCMP have confirmed that they received a report of a structure fire on 1st Street and Center Avenue in the City of Airdrie at 4:57 a.m. on January 1, 2023.

"Police and fire services are currently on the scene. Police are asking individuals to avoid the area so emergency crews can work."

According to a social media post by the city's Fire Chief, Mike Pirie, fire crews did in fact respond to a commercial building fire in the morning. Initially, roads were blocked with hoses. However, in a later update, Chief Pirie stated that the fire was under control and confined to one business. No injuries were reported.

"Several witnesses called in reporting the fire. When the Engine from Veterans Fire Station arrived there was heavy fire in one area of the building and smoke throughout the entire structure," Chief Pirie wrote in an update on Sunday afternoon.

Two Engines and one Ladder truck from Airdrie were deployed. The Crossfield Fire Department provided an additional Engine as mutual aid. Chief Pirie noted that crews will be on the scene working on hot spots this morning. Some roads will remain blocked while hoses are deployed.

Currently, there are no damage estimates available.

On Tuesday, January 2, RCMP confirmed that the fire is being investigated as arson.
