City RCMP have responded to several incidents where children have been seen playing on pond and river ice in Airdrie. Police are encouraging everyone to stay off the ice at this time as it's not thick enough to support weight.

Being safe on the ice is everyone’s responsibility. If you plan on walking or skating by yourself, the ice thickness should be at least 15 cm, and in order for multiple people to be on the ice, the thickness needs to be at least 20 cm.

Keep in mind, there are additional factors that can affect ice thickness: like the size and depth of the pond or river, and currents under the ice will cause it to vary in thickness within the immediate area. As well, logs, rocks and docks can absorb the heat from the sun, affecting the strength of the ice.
