The city of Airdrie is reminding residents to please not flush the so-called flushable wipes as they can cause some trouble.

Kelly McKague, the Team Lead for water services with the city that even though some things may say they are flushable, they are not.

"It can clog up pipes and cause damage to personal property and more maintenance for us to clean it out."

The city does have a list of things they ask Airdronians to not flush. The list includes the following:

  • Fat, oil and grease (FOG)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Medicines
  • Food waste
  • Cotton balls and Q-tips
  • Chemicals
  • Plastic items
  • Needles and syringes
  • Clothing and rags
  • Cement and building materials
  • Wood
  • Razor blades
  • Household and garden waste
  • Dead fish and pet waste

McKague did mention since COVID the levels of how many non-flushable items they have seen have come back down to normal.

"We try and stay proactive with it. We're flushing main lines all the time and essentially, what we're finding is when we go through and flush a main out, we'll see it coming through before it actually plugs off and creates a bigger problem."

The city's goal is to try and have as clean of main lines as possible.
