You're most likely going to find some time this holiday season to snuggle up in front of the TV and pop some holiday cheer into your DVD or Bluray Player (or in Marty's case, BetaMax).

Thought we'd compile a list of holiday necessities to waste an hour and half or so of well deserved downtime after spending around the same time in that line up in the mall, that single lineup that felt like it took forever.

Now keep in mind, these are 'Major Motion Pictures' here. This means they were released in theatres, and were once available at a magic store called Blockbuster. So, while the Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer stop motion animation is an absolute classic, and a must watch for anyone born in the television era... not on the list.

Chances are, you'll be able to catch these for free on one of the gazillion channels available to us in this technology age, or you should be able to find it on iTunes, or by other means over the next few days.

We're also going to put this in no particular order, cause these are amazing movies that may or may not fit your tastes. This isn't about why one movie is better than the other, more to remind you, or suggest to you some holiday watching.

Christmas Vacation

Christmas isn't Christmas without the Griswolds. All of them. In one room. Including the boxed up, and wrapped Cat (we don't condone this behaviour, but it was darn funny in the movie). There's just something everyone can relate to in Clark Griswold, the happy go lucky man of the house. Every time I step on my ladder to put up my sad display of Christmas lights, I think of the glorious creation Chevy Chase's character comes up with.

And really, we all have an Uncle Eddie, don't we?

Muppet Christmas Carol

OK, truth be told... This one is a mash-up. Christina suggested "A Christmas Carol" with Alastair Sim, but this is my list... so we're going with the Muppets on this one. Really, this one is more about family than anything. A classic story, as told by the timeless Muppet clan.

Honorable mention to the Mickey Mouse version of the story, and also to the much darker "Scrooged" staring Bill Murray.

ADDED BONUS!!!

Don't say we here at Air 106.1 didn't get you anything for Christmas. Here's the gag reel from the movie. Even puppets make mistakes.

Elf

"It's the only Will Ferrell movie I can stand to watch" - Christina Waldner

This film became a Christmas classic the moment it hit theatres. People were quoting it over and over and over again, as if it were a movie about an anchorman in the 70s with an amazing mustache. The cast is amazing, and a clueless Ferrell is hard not to love.

And yes, that's a blond Zoey Deschanel, which frankly makes up for seeing Will Ferrell in tights for most of the movie. Just saying.

It's A Wonderful Life

In order to make sure we had representation from pre-1970, cause believe it or not, they did make great movies back then as well, Christina told me to put this on the list or she would punch me in the face. She almost punched me in the face when she found out I had yet to see "Its A Wonderful Life" (Some of the previous statements may or may not have been completely accurate).

Sadly, this is the only reference I have to the movie... Remember MTV's Liquid Television, which was shown on late night Muchmusic in the 90s?

Die Hard

Yes. It's a Christmas movie, with guns, and explosions, and 'Yippie Ki Yays'.

On that note... this also is a Christmas movie...

Gremlins

A Christmas Story

Last, but absolutely not least. I mean, TBS shows this one on a constant loop December 25th. It's easily one of the best Christmas movies out there.

There's something in this movie for everyone, and it's a perfect way to end the recommendations.
