The 11th annual Penguin Walk is set to officially start on Friday, January 13 at 10:30 A.M. at the Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo.
"The annual Penguin Walk is a tremendous enrichment opportunity for our king penguins, a species known to walk far distances to find open water in the wild," The Calgary Zoo said in a media release. "This highly anticipated program allows visitors to get an up-close look at the group of king penguins as they explore, exercise and waddle their way through the zoo."
Visitors can catch up to 14 king penguins participating in the daily walk, including Diana, Grace, Arthur, Solomon, Cleopatra, Josephine, Louis, Phillipe, Henri, Napoleon, George, Boudicca, Rupert and (possibly) the newest king chick!
The walk starts at Penguin Plunge, loops down to the Discovery Trail Bridge, and then back up to the penguin habitat. However, the walk is dependent on not only the weather but the penguins themselves.
"The Penguin Walk is dependent on the birds’ desire to walk as well as the weather. If the temperature warms up to +5°C, drops to or below -25°C, or the winds are too excessive, the walk will be cancelled."
In the event the walk is cancelled, the zoo does inform the public via its website and social media channels. The earliest the walk will be cancelled is 9:00 a.m. and the latest is 10:00 a.m.
The walk will continue through till mid-march if the weather permits.
If you'd like to see the penguins, you are encouraged to arrive before the walk starts in order to find a good viewing spot along the designated route, indicated by the green chains and silver/white stanchion posts. Visitors are encouraged to remain in their viewing spot for the duration of the walk, which usually is around 15 minutes. The event is included with daily admission or memberships, though parking is not included.
Discover Airdrie/Air 106.1 FM will be streaming the walk on our Facebook page live on Friday if you don't get a chance to see the adorable penguins in person!
