After a year of investigation, a Calgary police constable has been charged with sexual assault.

"On December 6, 2022, Const. Gurluv Singh was charged with sexual assault. He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled for his first appearance on January 5, 2023, in Calgary Provincial Court," a news release from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) stated.

ASIRT was directed in October 2021 to investigate the allegation and during the course of its investigation it was made known that the officer had been at a licensed establishment in Calgary on October 9 20221, and while there, he touched a staff member in a sexual manner without her consent.

According to ASIRT, the evidence gathered during its investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed. As is required by the Police Act, the investigation was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) to determine whether the evidence met the standard for prosecution.

"Following a review of the investigation and having been advised that the ACPS was of the opinion that the evidence did meet their standard for prosecution, ASIRT Executive Director Michael Ewenson determined that the involved officer should be charged."

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.
