Since April 6, when The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) stated that two poultry farms had been placed under quarantine due to a highly infectious variant of the avian flu (subtype H5N1), also known as the bird flu, three more instances of bird flu in a poultry flock have been identified in Mountain View County.

According to the CFIA's website, the recent poultry flocks were identified between April 12 and April 15.

In Alberta, there have now been 12 instances of bird flu found in flocks, with the most in Mountain View County. Other provinces affected include British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

"The CFIA has established Primary Control Zones (PCZ), in the areas where the disease has been identified. The PCZs have been established to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza," according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. "

Avian Influenza viruses, such as the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus present in Asia, can, on rare occasions, cause disease in humans.

"Transmission to humans has occurred when people have had close contact with infected birds or heavily contaminated environments."
