Local Saheed Alawiye made Airdrie proud by bringing home a silver medal in wheelchair basketball at the 2023 Canada Winter Games.

Alawiye was more than excited to represent his province on the provincial stage.

"It was a great experience with wonderful people. It was filled with emotion, and tears of joy."

Having great coaches and awesome teammates made the experience even better, explained Alawiye.

"We all have the same goal and are driven to achieve a medal, which I believe we truly deserved."

When reminiscing about what his favourite memories from the game are, he said it was all about being in the moment.

"Just having fun with my teammates and my coaches. We always listened to music in the changing rooms and it's just a fun experience. Whatever happens on the court stays on the court."

This was actually Alawiye's third Canada Games as he has participated in two Canada Summer Games. He participated in the 100m, 200m, and 400m in track and field.

Alawiye finished off by saying he still meets up with his Alberta teammates as they get together a couple of times a month to train and play against each other.
