Airdrie will be hosting its first provincial hockey tournament for the first time in nearly 20 years, hosted by the U18 Female A Airdrie Lightning. Ron Ebbesen Arena will see six different teams fill the ice surfaces from March 31 - April 2.

Airdrie's first game of provincials is Friday, 1:30 p.m. against the Calgary Flyers at the Ron Ebbesen Arena.

The teams competing in this year's provincials include:

  • Airdrie
  • EG701 Griffins (Edmonton)
  • Stettler
  • Calgary Flyers
  • Sherwood Park
  • Okotoks

Russ Huck, U18 Female A Hockey Provincials Host Chair explained Airdrie Minor Hockey Association helped make the bid happen.

"Earlier in the year, Airdrie Minor Hockey Association sent out an email to everybody that they were willing to help with a bid for provincials, so we jumped on the opportunity."

Hosting provincials in Airdrie is something that has not happened in a long time.

"Any hockey provincial, Airdrie hasn't hosted in well over 20 years, this is a major thing for the city."

There will be opening ceremonies and also a "Breakaway Bash" Friday night.

The Breakaway Bash is an event for all the teams to get together and just have fun with different types of events, Huck mentioned there will be a DJ, dance, and six different game stations like an accurate shot and axe throwing and possibly some food trucks to keep everybody fed.

Right now, Huck mentioned they are seeing how many people will attend from the teams before and if they go on sale to the general public.
