To honour the victims of the 2018 Humboldt bus crash and organ donor Logan Boulet, Airdrie has established April 7 as Green Shirt Day.

On Green Shirt Day, Airdrie City Hall will colour itself green to support the recognition of organ donations.

Airdrie City Hall will also host a family-free skate held at Genesis Place between 6 P.M. and 8 P.M. to honour the Saskatchewan Humboldt Broncos hockey team.

Tara Murphy, the organizer of Green Shirt Day in Airdrie, says people will also be able to bid on a small silent auction with items from local businesses, the Calgary Flames, and WestJet.

“We will have some volunteers from the Canadian Transplant Association, who will be there to not only give out information about organ donation and teach people about organ donation but also, we will have the ability for people to register right there.”

This year will be the fourth Annual Green Shirt Day. Wearing a green shirt on April 7th helps recognize the importance of organ donors and encourages conversations and registration.

“Green Shirt Day is used to bring awareness to having those kitchen table talks with your family about your wishes, and to also honour Logan and the entire Humboldt Broncos team.”

On April 6th, 2018, the Humboldt Broncos Hockey team bus crashed after colliding with a semi-truck near Armley, Saskatchewan. The accident injured thirteen passengers on the bus and caused sixteen others to die.

The day after, on April 7th, one of the Humboldt Broncos team members, Logan Boulet, died in the hospital after his injuries from the crash became too severe for doctors to treat. Because Logan had recently registered to become an organ donor, his parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered Logan's organs to other patients so they could continue to live on.

Shortly after hearing about Logan's donation, close to one-hundred-fifty-thousand Canadians were inspired by his actions and registered to become organ donors. This is now known as “The Logan Boulet Effect”.
