In a recent press release, Airdrie-Banff Member of Parliament, Blake Richards, says it’s time for the federal Liberal government to stop impeding Canada’s energy potential.

According to Richards, he believes that the vital component of the world's energy infrastructure is natural gas, a low-emission energy source.

“Currently, non-democratic nations produce a large portion of the world's natural gas. Their debt and income from reserves just give them more confidence to fund war and violations of human rights,” Richards stated.

Richards underlined that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has demonstrated how difficult Europe's continuous reliance on Russian natural gas has become.

Richards said that Canada has some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world.

“Exporting Canadian Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) abroad would help displace the demand for Russian natural gas while providing our country with immeasurable economic benefits and diplomatic leverage.”

In his view, Canada lacks the infrastructure to export LNG overseas and believes that the federal government has consistently denied project approvals citing their inability to meet unrealistic standards.

“On his recent trip to Canada, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz practically begged Canada to open up its LNG to European markets. Predictably, Trudeau quickly denied any plans to do so.”

According to a report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Europe, including the United Kingdom, imported a record high amount of LNG in April 2022, averaging 16.5 billion cubic feet per day.
