According to Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel, the fire department received a call late Thursday morning to a structure fire at St. Martin de Porres High School.

"On arrival, approximately 670 students plus 70 staff had already evacuated to their evacuation staging area. There were no injuries to report," Deputy Rabel said.

He added that crews were able to reach the part of the school where the fire was, bringing it under control quickly.

"[There are] very heavy smoke conditions in half of the school. The fire doors did keep smoke from going through the entire school."

Students and staff have been sent home for the rest of the day, while those who are not able to go home immediately can go to St. Paul’s Catholic Church on Main Street.

Fire and emergency continued to be on the scene. When asked if there's any indication of what caused the fire, Rabel said it is much too soon to determine.

"Our investigators are on the scene right now from the Fire Prevention Bureau doing interviews and taking photos."
