Mattamy Homes held a ‘ground breaking’ event (even though they have started construction) for one of Airdrie’s newest communities, Southwinds.

In partnership with Rocky View Schools and the city of Airdrie, this community will see a school and the new recreational center.

Councillor Tina Petrow was at the event, and is very excited to see what Southwinds turns into.

“This is a very exciting project because this is going to mean a second rec facility for the city. It's going to mean another high school, which we are in desperate need of in the city.”

The project will be preserving a lot of the natural environment, while also providing another off-leash dog park.

Joe Case, Mattamy’s Vice President in Land Development, mentioned they have been in the city since 2007 and that this will be the third master plan community.

“The three parties together wanted to collectively bring a new community to market that included a future rec center site and a future high school site. It's been a labor of love for the past five years between the three parties, and we're certainly happy to be celebrating breaking ground on it today”

Even though it’s a rough estimate, Case mentioned that Rocky View Schools is aiming for 2026 for the new school while the city is aiming for 2029 for the recreational center.
