Born Calgarian Pierre Poilievre has won the leadership race being crowned the new federal Conservative Party leader.

According to the Conservative Party, a whole  417,987 ballots were counted this week in preparation for tonight's leadership results.

Airdrie Banff MP Blake Richards took to social media to share his thoughts on his endorsee winning the race.

"I have seen his leadership abilities first-hand, and I am confident that Conservative members made the right choice in electing him to be our leader.

With Pierre chosen as our new leader and Parliament reconvening next week, I'm excited to join the entire Conservative Caucus in returning to the House of Commons to hold the Liberal government accountable, and ultimately replace them in the next election."

Alberta's leadership election will take place on October 6 by mail in ballot.
