A 16-year-old Airdrie youth has been charged with several offences after Airdrie RCMP were called to a break-and-enter in progress on February 27.

"At approximately 9:43 a.m., Airdrie RCMP responded to a suspicious person complaint on Summerfield Road in Airdrie. Upon arrival at the residence, it was determined that it was a break-and-enter in progress and the suspect was still inside the residence," a police release stated.

Officers called out to the suspect, telling him that he was under arrest. The suspect then opened a window and exited the residence. He ran at officers and bear-sprayed two of them, at which time officers noticed he was holding an edged weapon in his other hand. Officers utilized the conducted energy weapon (Taser), and were able to take the suspect into custody.

The youth was charged with:

  • Break and enter and theft
  • Assault a Peace Officer with a weapon (x2)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Resist  arrest
  • Disguised with intent to commit an offence

After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, the youth was released on no cash bail with conditions and will be appearing in Airdrie Provincial Court this month.
