On September 23, the Kalix Legacy Foundation will be holding its 2022 Charity Golf Classic at the Apple Creek Golf Course. The tournament and subsequent funds raised for the foundation is all a part of the legacy of the late Kalix Langenau, a legacy his parents are determined to continue to fulfill.

"It was his wish to provide funding for low-income families, single-parent homes, as well as proper fitting, safe equipment. We know that in a lot of low-income homes, the equipment is handed down, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's properly fit for the next child. So, he [Kalix] saw a gap in the system and really wanted to fill it. We've taken his dream and we've made it a reality," said Betina Fillion, Kalix's step-mother and the Secretary/Treasurer of the foundation.

Currently, the foundation is seeking the support of the community, including businesses and individuals who can make donations and provide sponsorship.

"We are looking at getting teams registered as soon as possible. We're also looking for different levels of sponsors in the community, anything from flag sponsors to court sponsors, [including] items for the silent auction, as well as door prizes."

For those interested, there is a $150 dollar registration fee per golfer and there will also be a contest for best-dressed teams; hence Fillion is asking that everyone bring not only their a-game to the course but also their impeccable sense of style.

"We are asking that the teams that do register, pick a theme, and dress to it. We will have random judges on the course selecting the best-dressed team and they will win a prize. Included in that [$150] are your golf fees, cart, meal, as well as access to some of the fun events that we have planned," she said.

Though over two years have passed since Kalix Langenau's untimely and horrific death, the Airdrie teenager continues to be mourned and missed by not only his family but the community; often remembered as a selfless young man, who was fiercely loyal and caring, on and off the sports field.

"He was raised in a blended family. He is one of six siblings combined, between the two households. He was an amazing brother who really looked out for his siblings and tried to make sure that they had the best of everything so that they could succeed in life," Fillion said. "It really goes to show who he was. He'd do anything for people. He actually donated his last paycheck with Explosive Edge, to help a family out. When I say that this was the legacy, this was his dream, and that we've helped build it."

Fillion said that the outpouring of support for both the upcoming tournament and the family has been nothing short of overwhelming.

"It's been really well received. We are a registered non-for-profit foundation; and within Airdrie, we have had amazing support. Everything that we raise local, we keep local. We fund local Airdrie families for local sports. It helps the local economy and we find that the support in this community is something we've never experienced before."

She underlined that the tournament is for anyone and everyone, regardless of their golfing skill, because what matters most in the end, is to remember the incredible young man and his deeds whose name is the namesake of the foundation.

"It keeps him alive in our eyes. It keeps his memory and it keeps him with us. We can remember how he lived and who he was and not just focus on the trauma of how he died."

Although Kalix was a natural athlete, excelling at almost any sport, Fillion fondly remembers that hockey came most naturally to him, even as a little boy.

"We couldn't pry him away from the net and Timbits. You [only had] two minutes and it was on a rotation and he could not wait for his two minutes in that net. He pulled out all the stops, even though at that age they didn't have the pads. He was making the moves and his heart was in it," she said. "That was probably one of my favourite [memories], seeing him in the net and becoming the goalie that he said [would become] on our very first day that we met."
