He may be working out of his basement in Calgary, but filmmaker J.S. Johnson is proud of where he came from.

The Airdrie native and graduate of Bert Church High School has been in the film industry since 2009, but his heart has been in the business for much longer.

Before attending Vancouver Film School, Johnson was excelling in the Media Arts course in High School as well as Drama, where the itch for making movies came to him.

Upon graduating from the popular film institution over six years ago, Johnson and fellow classmate Chris Shalom went right to work on their first feature film, California Balloons.

That movie would eventually become the name of their current company, California Balloon Films.

Since their launch, the team has produced several films including Truth, April and their current project Space Rippers.

What makes California Balloon Films different from other studios is their philosophy around free content.

All of their feature films are available complete and free to watch via their You Tube Channel.

Johnson had a chance to join us in the AIR 106.1 studio to explain why this philopsophy exists and how he hopes to inspire the next generation of independant film makers.
