The flu hasn't hit you yet...
Avoid close contact with people, especially those who are sick, this lowers your risk of exposure. Wash your hands thoroughly and often. If you get the flu shot each year, this is one of the most efficient ways to avoid getting sick. The vaccine is free to Alberta residents aged six months and up, at your local Alberta Health Service department and at most pharmacies. Eat your fruits and veggies because they provide your body with bacteria fighting vitamins and nutrients and also strengthen your immune system. Practise good hygiene habits like not touching your eyes, mouth, or nose, and always keep your home and belongings clean... disinfect to protect!
Uh oh, you've caught the flu...
This one's obvious - stay home! Give your body the rest and healing it needs. Stay hydrated with water as water flushes out toxins and bacteria. Over-the-counter medications help relieve your flu symptoms like cough, congestion, and body aches. Eat a homemade chicken noodle soup - it has been proven to help speed up recovery by boosting your immune system. And it also tastes amazing.
Try this concoction I make all the time when I've got the flu (it really helps, I promise): 1 cup of hot water, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of ground fresh ginger, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
Finally, don't overexert yourself as your body needs the little energy it has to fight off the virus. A great excuse to stay in bed and watch Netflix all day!
